Suicide Awareness

In the United States, suicide claims the lives of more people than homicide and HIV combined.  Suicide touches everyone- all ages and backgrounds, all racial and ethnic groups, in all parts of the country.  There is help, and hope, when individuals, organizations and communities join forces to address suicide as a preventable problem.

Warning Signs of Suicide

  • Depression, feelings of hopelessness, or suicidal thoughts
  • Impulsiveness, extreme anxiety, agitation, irritability or risky behavior
  • Withdrawal from others; giving away treasured belongings
  • Loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed
  • Abuse of alcohol, drugs, or other substances

Remember, if you are concerned about someone, and you think they may be considering suicide, you can ACT to prevent suicide.

A - Ask the question - "Are you thinking of harming yourself?"

C - Care for this person - Listen with compassion and voice your concern.

T - Take action - seek professional help

Remember- Help is just a phone call away

Grant Mental Healthcare News

For 65 years, Mental Health America and our affiliates across the country have led the observance of May is Mental Health Month by reaching millions of people through the media, local events and screenings. The 2014 May is Mental Health Month theme is “Mind Your Health.” Our goals are to build public recognition about the importance of mental health to overall health and wellness; inform people of the ways that the mind and body interact with each other; and provide tips and tools for taking positive actions to protect mental health and promote whole health.

Mind Your Health

Did you know...

  • About 1 in 5 adults will have a mental health condition in any given year?

  • But only 41 % of them will receive services.

  • About 10% of the American adult population will have a mood disorder, such as depression or bipolar.

  • 18% have an anxiety disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder.

Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety are real, common and treatable.  Recovery is possible, but not all of us think about our mental health enough.
