Jail
Garden: The jail garden initially was comprised of approximately
2000 square feet of raised bed garden. As of summer 2003 the garden has
expanded to approximately 7,000 square feet of raised beds growing vegetables,
berries, grapes, and fruit trees. Vegetable plants are started in the
facility greenhouse in early spring for transplant after the frost danger
is gone.
Produce grown in the garden is used in both the Maximum and Medium Security
facilities. Money saved from growing produce on facility grounds combined
with donated food items from local processing plants and grocers total
a combined value of approximately $50,000.00 annually. Initial funds for garden
bed materials, drip irrigation supplies, greenhouse construction materials,
tools, seed and educational supplies were obtained by means of a grant
in the amount of $14,000.00
Sewing Repair/Leather Fabrication: Inmate used items (coveralls,
mattress covers, blankets, sheets) are repaired by inmate workers using 2 industrial
duty sewing machines. Leather items such as transport belts, are fabricated
with provided tools under staff supervision. Sewing machines, tools and equipment
for this project were provided by means of a $13,500.00 grant.
In House Laundry: In conjunction with the normal laundering of jail
issued clothing and bedding. Inmate workers also wash and press staff uniforms.
